ased in Los Angeles, Estevan Oriol is known for capturing the true essence of street life through photographs. Today, his work has been featured in magazines worldwide and he has photographed numerous Hip-Hop Artists and celebrities. Oriol’s skill and determination has led him to bring his creative vision to multiple projects including books, heading up clothing lines, and directing films.
Oriol first started in the entertainment industry in 1992 as a tour manager for the rap group House of Pain. On tour, Oriol began chronicling his experiences through photographs. Upon returning home, he developed his unique photographic style taking pictures of neighborhood friends and the local low-rider culture.
Fueled by elements of the Los Angeles streets, Oriol has perfected a photographic style all his own. Preferring to use film rather than digital and black and white instead of color gives Oriol’s work a classic touch. The traditional color palette contrasts with the raw elements and characteristic of Oriol’s photographs. This opposition is a testament to Oriol’s commitment to authenticity and his distinct, creative approach.
As a member of Soul Assassins, a group of artists involved in various projects relating to the areas of photography, fashion, music and fine art, Oriol has built a strong business partnership and friendship with world-renowned tattoo artist Mr. Cartoon. Finding commonality and inspiration in their shared hometown, the two are co-owners of Joker Brand Clothing, an internationally recognized brand that draws its inspiration from LA street culture.
Achieving success through communication and mutual respect Oriol and Mr. Cartoon have extended their creativity to another project, SA Studios, a multi-cultural multimedia design/art company. This venture seeks to assist clients such as Harley Davidson, Nike and Toyota in reaching the Hispanic Urban market.
Mr. Cartoon and Oriol continue to fuse their creative spirits as Oriol branches out into the film industry. Recognizing his unique talent, Imagine Entertainment and Universal Pictures has recently partnered with SA Studios, requesting Oriol for a three-picture deal. As part of this endeavor, Oriol has chosen the life story of his best friend and business partner Mr. Cartoon as his feature film debut. The film, tentatively entitled Ink, has a 2009 release date.
Oriol’s commitment to authenticity moves him to constantly seek opportunities for artistic involvement. In 2006 Oriol collaborated with the founder and owner of the clothing brand Upper Playground, Matt Revelli, using his photographs to produce a line of t-shirts for the brand. In addition, he joined forces with Adidas, and the owners of an exclusive sneaker boutique Undefeated, James Bond and Eddie Cruz to release a limited edition sneaker. Paired with the sneaker is the book, 1979, a pictorial shot by Oriol which celebrates Adidas’ basketball history
Taking his involvement in the entertainment industry even further, this year, Oriol released a “Women of LA” 2009 Calendar, a deck of playing cards both featuring his famous photography and he opened a store, The Last Laugh, in downtown Los Angeles.
Although Oriol has earned attention and fame, he continues to stay true to his roots directing music videos, taking photographs and spreading Los Angeles culture internationally. His classic style combined with a hard edge makes him a force to be reckoned with and a true Soul Assassin.
